Welcome to my studio!
It is a pleasure to take you on this journey with me.
My name is Harrison Mills, and I work and exhibit in Melbourne/Naarm Australia under the name HILLS hence STUDIO HILLS.
I have dedicated my artistic practice to pushing the medium of charcoal. My large-scale works are confessional in nature and often speak to the tension found within self-reflection.
The human body remains a consistent motif in my work. A subject matter that I find to be timeless yet temporary, ever changing and fluid, I believe that the human body demands to be examined.

‘Guard dog’ depicts a relationship of restraint. Like a beast on a chain, this piece portrays someone clasping a sword laying in someone’s lap. This explores the tension experienced when trusting someone, as the human condition is to be as unpredictable as a wild dog. It is the closest relationships that have the power to inflict the most damage, whether it is emotionally or physically.
Hence the subjects are condemned to wear their masks, waiting out the other, never to lower their guard.

This piece is a study from Michelangelo Buonarroti's 1504 sculpture David
This depicts a pensive moment of contemplation before the biblical encounter of David and Goliath whereby the young shepherd David steps forward to fight a terrifying giant with a sling and a few stones, ultimately triumphing.
